Armed with shovels, buckets and determination, entire families of fortune seekers have travelled from across South Africa to a small village in the country’s east in search of what they believe to be diamonds. It started when a herdsman dug up a huge crystal-like stone in the small village of of KwaHlathi in the province of KwaZulu-Natal. However, geologists have not yet confirmed whether it is a precious diamond. Senegal’s army says it has captured rebel bases in the south. It is the latest offensive against an armed group that wants to create an independent state in the southern Casamance region. Senegal hopes the operation will help end one of Africa’s longest civil conflicts. The Movement of Democratic Forces of Casamance, also known as the MFDC, has been fighting for independence from Senegal for the last 40 years. A vigil has been held in Canada in memory of a Muslim family killed when the driver of a pick-up truck ran them over. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has called the attack on the Afzaal family in Ontario a “terrorist attack”. Police say the crime was motivated by anti-Muslim hate. A 20-year-old man, Nathaniel Veltman, was arrested and charged with four counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder. A cargo ship carrying tonnes of toxic chemicals and plastic is sinking off Sri Lanka’s west coast, threatening to spill oil into the surrounding waters. Conservationists have described it as one of Sri Lanka’s worst environmental disasters after plastic pellets from the Singapore-registered MV X-Press Pearl washed up on shore. The ship had been on fire since May 20 before the blaze was extinguished. Rescue teams had been trying to tow the ship out to the deep sea when it began to sink off Sri Lanka’s main port of Colombo.
