Lavrov denigrates West’s stance towards Africa on Ethiopia visit

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said Moscow supports Ethiopia’s efforts to stabilise its internal political situation in remarks that sought to draw a contrast with what he presented as meddling by the West. Lavrov was in Addis Ababa on Wednesday wrapping up a four-nation African tour aimed at drumming up support for Moscow at a time of confrontation with Western powers over the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Most African nations, mindful of economic interests and historical ties with both Russia and the West, have declined to take sides over Ukraine. Kenyans protest against high prices, national debt as vote nears

In Kenya, demonstrators on the streets of Nairobi are showing their frustration ahead of August general elections. People are unhappy about rising prices, stagnating wages and a large national debt. Politicians are using this campaign season to promise to fix the economy. But many voters are not convinced, saying they are disillusioned and do not trust their leaders. Economists say a new government will find it hard to lessen the burden for most people. ECOWAS meeting: Bloc set to discuss politics, regional violence

West African leaders are due to meet in Ghana’s capital as the region sees an increase in attacks by armed groups. Leaders of the ECOWAS bloc are also expected to review sanctions imposed on a number of countries under military rule. Another concern for West African leaders as their economies struggle, is the rise of protests against inflation and shortages. Analysts expect more demonstrations like the ones recently seen in Ghana, sparked by the rising cost of living. And they say, there is little regional leaders can do to stop this from happening. Gambia investment boom: Diaspora remittances fuel local economy

A sharp increase in the amount of money sent back home by expats is fueling an investment boom in The Gambia. And much of that cash is ending up the real estate sector. An estimated 120,000 Gambians live and work overseas, most of them in Europe and the United States. It is a sign of hope for an economy that has been battered by the COVID-19 pandemic. And the influx of cash is even drawing some back to the country. France, European allies announce military withdrawal from Mali

France and its allies in a European force have announced they will begin withdrawing troops from Mali after nearly 10 years fighting an armed unrest. A statement signed by France and its African and European allies and published on Thursday said that “multiple obstructions” by the ruling military government meant that the conditions were no longer in place to operate in Mali. The decision applies to both France’s Barkhane force in the Sahel and the Takuba European force that Paris had been trying to forge along with its allies. Burkina Faso’s army has announced it has deposed President Roch Kabore, dissolved the government and the national assembly, and suspended the constitution, seizing control of the country after two days of unrest at army camps in the capital.
