Cameroon authorities urge calm after police kill girl, 5, in Buea

There are calls for calm in western Cameroon, after a schoolgirl was killed when police at a checkpoint shot at a car. The police officer blamed for firing the shots died after he was attacked by a crowd. The incident took place in Buea, where English-speaking separatists have been in conflict with government forces for four years. Chile declares state of emergency over Mapuche conflict

Chile’s President Sebastian Pinera has imposed a state of emergency over the Mapuche conflict. The Mapuche, Chile’s largest Indigenous group, have been involved in five centuries of struggle for their ancestral land. Mapuche demands have been mainly met with silence, leading some armed groups to attack trucks and farmland in the last 10 years. With the Chilean president under pressure from right-wing factions in his party, troops are being sent to two southern regions hit by the violence. Burkina Faso opens trial on 1987 Sankara assassination

A trial has begun in Burkina Faso for 14 people accused of involvement in the assassination of former President Thomas Sankara. Sankara came to power in 1983 and was shot dead four years later. He was a revolutionary leader who had called on African countries to default on unfair international debt. Among the suspects is former President Blaise Compaore. Compaore was deposed in 2014 following a popular uprising that brought an end to his 27-year rule. He lives in exile in neighbouring Ivory Coast and has refused to take part in the trial. Nigerian states arm locals against rise in attacks by armed groups

At least 20 people have been killed in Nigeria’s Sokoto state when gunmen attacked a market. Armed groups still disrupt life for millions in the country’s northwest, but Nigeria is also facing growing insecurity across regions.
