Afghan gov’t struggles to counter sweeping Taliban advances

Tajikistan is deploying thousands of reserve soldiers to protect its border with Afghanistan where the Taliban has been fast capturing more territory. The Afghan government in Kabul has said that the areas recently seized by the Taliban will soon be retaken in a counteroffensive. Over the last six days, the Taliban took control of 36 districts, or 10 percent of the country. This was the picture on Monday. The Taliban has doubled the number of districts it controls since May 1 when US forces started their final withdrawal, a move now more than 90 percent complete. Taliban seizes key districts in Afghanistan as gov’t forces flee

The Taliban has made significant territorial gains in Afghanistan in the past weeks, as US forces count down to their final withdrawal. Fighters have captured Panjwai in Kandahar, the group’s birthplace and former stronghold, and are inching closer to the regional capital, Kandahar city. Panjwai is the fifth district in Kandahar province to fall to the armed group in recent weeks as the Taliban offensive gains momentum. Taliban captures Afghanistan’s main Tajikistan border crossing

Afghans hold funeral for victims of Kabul school bomb blasts

Dozens of young girls have been buried at a desolate hilltop cemetery in Kabul, a day after a secondary school was targeted in the bloodiest attack in Afghanistan in more than a year. The attack happened in Dasht-e-Barchi, a west Kabul suburb populated mostly by Hazara Shia, just as pupils were leaving at the end of the day. Witnesses said it appeared well-coordinated and intended to kill as many children as possible.
