Fresh floods in central China as typhoon heads towards east coast

Deaths in flooded subway as torrential rain hits central China

At least 12 people have been killed in the Chinese city of Zhengzhou, as severe flooding sweeps China’s central province of Henan. Tens of thousands are also forced to evacuate their homes after three days of heavy rainfall, which was close to the annual average rainfall. The army has warned one of the region’s stricken dams may collapse at any time, risking the lives of about seven million people. Increased urbanisation and climate change have worsened the effect of floods in recent years. Germany floods: Historic town buried in mud

Rescue teams in Germany are continuing the search for more victims of last week’s devastating floods. Almost 200 people have been confirmed dead in Germany and neighbouring countries. An army of volunteers has been helping German residents who were badly hit by the disaster. Fast-moving Atlantic Storm Elsa makes landfall in Cuba

Tropical Storm Elsa is on its way to the US state of Florida after its destructive path wreaking havoc in the Caribbean. Cuban officials had evacuated 180,000 people as a precaution against the possibility of heavy flooding from a storm that already battered several Caribbean islands, killing at least three people. The storm slowly moved north, towards the capital, where preparations were under way. Disaster feared as fire-hit cargo ship sinks off Sri Lanka coast

A cargo ship carrying tonnes of toxic chemicals and plastic is sinking off Sri Lanka’s west coast, threatening to spill oil into the surrounding waters. Conservationists have described it as one of Sri Lanka’s worst environmental disasters after plastic pellets from the Singapore-registered MV X-Press Pearl washed up on shore. The ship had been on fire since May 20 before the blaze was extinguished. Rescue teams had been trying to tow the ship out to the deep sea when it began to sink off Sri Lanka’s main port of Colombo. Extreme cold weather hits China ultramarathon, kills 21 runners

At least 21 people have been killed after hail, freezing rain and high winds stuck during an ultramarathon in China’s Gansu province on Saturday. A total of 172 people took part in the race, 151 have been confirmed safe after rescuers found all the missing runners on Sunday. DR Congo orders Goma evacuation after Mount Nyiragongo erupts

A volcanic eruption near the city of Goma in the Democratic Republic of Congo has forced thousands of people to flee for safety. At least five people died in a car crash in the panic. Neighbouring Rwanda has opened its border to let in those fleeing the eruption. Initially, scientists said the lava flow was heading away from Goma, but now they’ve warned that new fractures have put two million residents at risk. St Vincent warns of water shortages as volcano eruptions continue

The Caribbean island of St Vincent has been rocked by another eruption as volcanic activity threatens crops, water and food supplies. The La Soufriere volcano began spewing ash and gas clouds last week, but Monday’s fresh eruption is thought to be the biggest yet. Some 16,000 residents have been evacuated, with experts saying the explosions could continue for weeks. Saint Vincent awaits more volcanic eruptions as help offered

Ash from a volcanic eruption on the Caribbean island of St Vincent is now falling on the island of Barbados, nearly 200 kilometres (124 miles) away. US Florida flood: Fears wastewater pond could leak, spilling toxic waste

A leak at a wastewater pond is causing concern that a “wall of water” could overwhelm hundreds of homes in the US state of Florida. Officials in Manatee County declared a state of emergency on Sunday and ordered that the area around the Piney Point reservoir site be evacuated. The large pond contains phosphorus and nitrogen from an old phosphate plant and the leak in the dam was discovered about a week ago.
