AT&T and Verizon will delay launching new wireless service near some airports in the United States after the nation’s largest airlines said the service would interfere with aircraft technology and cause massive flight disruptions. The decision from the telecommunication companies arrived Tuesday as the administration of US President Joe Biden tried to broker a settlement between the telecom companies and the airlines over a rollout of new 5G service, scheduled for Wednesday. Thousands of protesters have packed Amsterdam’s streets in opposition to the government-imposed COVID-19 restrictions and vaccination campaign as virus infections hit a new record. Authorities were granted stop and search powers at several locations across the city and scores of riot police vans patrolled neighbourhoods where the demonstrators marched with banners and yellow umbrellas. Regular protests against COVID measures are held across the country and Sunday’s large gathering was joined by farmers who drove to the capital and parked tractors along the central Museum Square. After a week of deadly unrest in Kazakhstan, Russia-led forces who were sent to quell riots are preparing to withdraw as President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev nominated a new prime minister. Tokayev said on Tuesday that the contingent of troops he requested from the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), a military alliance of ex-Soviet states, would begin leaving the troubled Central Asian country in two days, with the pullout to take no more than 10 days. A United States jury found Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes guilty of conspiring to defraud investors in the blood-testing startup. Holmes was convicted Monday on four of 11 counts. She was acquitted on four counts, and the jury could not reach a decision on three counts. Prosecutors said Holmes, 37, swindled private investors between 2010 and 2015 by convincing them that Theranos’s small machines could run a range of tests with a few drops of blood from a finger prick. Holmes was also charged with misleading patients about the tests’ accuracy. Holmes rose to Silicon Valley fame after founding Theranos in 2003. A left-wing legislator who rose to prominence during anti-government protests in Chile has been elected the country’s next president. With almost 99 percent of polling stations reporting, Gabriel Boric won 56 percent of the votes, compared with 44 percent for his conservative opponent, Jose Antonio Kast. In a model of civility that broke from the polarizing rhetoric of the campaign, Kast immediately recognised defeat, tweeting a photo of himself on the phone with his opponent congratulating him on his “grand triumph”. The North Crimea Canal in southern Ukraine used to supply the majority of the peninsula’s water needs. Ukraine built dams on the canal after Russia annexed Crimea in 2014, saying it would only allow water to flow when Russia ends its occupation. Russia has been transporting water in, but rationing has reportedly become worse with the arrival of tens of thousands of additional Russian troops.
