Azerbaijan estimates 14,000 square kilometres (5,405 square miles) in and around the region are contaminated with mines and unexploded munitions.
They pose a serious danger to civilians – and to the crews tasked with clearing the sites.

ANAMA personal are heroes in the shadows of this conflict. Since first war they are on active duty to clean the land from unexploded shells and mines. Many civilians died during 27 years due to intense mining in the region. All international organizations acknowledge NK region as integral part of Azerbaijan, they should put an effort in the clearing program so displaced people can go back soon. Agriculture, tourism cannot exist in the region untill the land is safe. We wanted peace, but we opened our eyes to the war as soon as we got our independence from imperialist Russia. We wanted peace after the war, waited for it for almost 30 years, but once again we were insulted by current leadership of Armenia. There is a limit for everything, and that “red line” was crossed, we fought, we won. Plus we offer armenians of the region a chance to live with us again despite the atrocities committed by their compatriots. Eventually, we have peace, but for it to last long region and border needs to be demilitarized, starting with cleaning land from mines. Then we’ll have lasting peace. Peace at home, peace in the world.

In 1930, the Kalbajar region with an area of 1936 km² was formed as part of the Azerbaijan SSR, the administrative centre of was the town of Kalbajar, which received the status of a city in 1980.
Armenian occupation

In April 1993, the United Nations Security Council adopted Resolution 822 which called for the withdrawal of all occupying forces from the Kalbajar district, including the town of Kalbajar.

As part of an agreement that ended the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh War the town and its surrounding district were initially to be returned to Azerbaijani control by 15 November 2020, but this deadline was subsequently extended to 25 November 2020

@archer brendy before the USSR the region was part of Azerbaijan(1918-1920) and even if you roll back in the history the region was called Karabakh Khanate(1748-1806) and the majority was Azerbaijanis, only 7 villages were partially or fully populated by Armenians.
