The United States has announced plans to pull nearly a third of its military personnel out of Germany in a continuing dispute over defence spending. President Donald Trump flagged the move back in June, amid a dispute with Berlin over its defence spending. Qatar Airways has launched international arbitration seeking at least $5bn from four Arab countries as compensation for blocking it from their airspace and removing it from their markets. Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt have essentially banned the airline since June 2017 when they cut all ties with Qatar and imposed an air, land and sea blockade on it over accusations of supporting “terrorism”. In Australia, half a century of aviation history has ended at Qantas Airways, with the early retirement of its final Boeing 747. It is the latest airline casualty of the coronavirus pandemic, which has devastated the industry globally, forcing many airlines to decommission part or parts of their fleet, and cut staff.
