Thousands protest against Dutch COVID restrictions

Thousands of protesters have packed Amsterdam’s streets in opposition to the government-imposed COVID-19 restrictions and vaccination campaign as virus infections hit a new record. Authorities were granted stop and search powers at several locations across the city and scores of riot police vans patrolled neighbourhoods where the demonstrators marched with banners and yellow umbrellas. Regular protests against COVID measures are held across the country and Sunday’s large gathering was joined by farmers who drove to the capital and parked tractors along the central Museum Square. Spain’s population dilemma: Country grapples with vanishing towns

According to government statistics, half of Spain’s municipalities are at risk of losing their population. These are primarily towns of fewer than 1000 people. But the data shows this issue is no longer confined to just rural areas. People are also moving out of provincial capitals and small to medium-sized cities. To reverse the trend, this year, the European Union gave Spain more than $11bn for a “repopulation program”. The goal is to provide small towns with more basic services, high-speed internet, and funding for housing and job creation. Putin addresses Ukraine, COVID, Navalny in annual news conference

Military tensions between Russia and the NATO alliance have featured prominently in President Vladimir Putin’s end of year news conference. Speaking to about 500 journalists in Moscow, Putin rejected the idea that Russia should provide security guarantees to the West. He says NATO should be the one giving assurances, because it has created the tensions. Crimea water dispute: Russia struggles to supply region

The North Crimea Canal in southern Ukraine used to supply the majority of the peninsula’s water needs. Ukraine built dams on the canal after Russia annexed Crimea in 2014, saying it would only allow water to flow when Russia ends its occupation. Russia has been transporting water in, but rationing has reportedly become worse with the arrival of tens of thousands of additional Russian troops. The area has now become a potential flashpoint between Kyiv and Moscow. Remnants of US army bases in Greenland pose pollution threat

At the height of the Cold War, the United States had around 50 military bases in Greenland. Many were left to decay and rust, polluting the fragile environment. One named Camp Century was even built under the ice before being abandoned. But as the ice melts there are fears that toxins and radioactive coolants – which were meant to stay buried forever – could soon be exposed.
