Disaster feared as fire-hit cargo ship sinks off Sri Lanka coast

A cargo ship carrying tonnes of toxic chemicals and plastic is sinking off Sri Lanka’s west coast, threatening to spill oil into the surrounding waters. Conservationists have described it as one of Sri Lanka’s worst environmental disasters after plastic pellets from the Singapore-registered MV X-Press Pearl washed up on shore. The ship had been on fire since May 20 before the blaze was extinguished. Rescue teams had been trying to tow the ship out to the deep sea when it began to sink off Sri Lanka’s main port of Colombo. Extreme cold weather hits China ultramarathon, kills 21 runners

At least 21 people have been killed after hail, freezing rain and high winds stuck during an ultramarathon in China’s Gansu province on Saturday. A total of 172 people took part in the race, 151 have been confirmed safe after rescuers found all the missing runners on Sunday. Afghans hold funeral for victims of Kabul school bomb blasts

Dozens of young girls have been buried at a desolate hilltop cemetery in Kabul, a day after a secondary school was targeted in the bloodiest attack in Afghanistan in more than a year. The attack happened in Dasht-e-Barchi, a west Kabul suburb populated mostly by Hazara Shia, just as pupils were leaving at the end of the day. Witnesses said it appeared well-coordinated and intended to kill as many children as possible.
